Preventative Medicine

Our goal at Harbor Animal Hospital is to prevent disease when possible and to identify illnesses early on when treatments can be the most successful. Even for healthy pets, yearly wellness exams are encouraged and are the foundation for your pet’s health plan. During a wellness exam, our veterinarians will perform a thorough physical exam of your pet. You and your veterinarian will also have the opportunity to discuss any health or behavior concerns.

For our young patients, puppy/kitten exams will allow your veterinarian to monitor your pets’ growth & development, evaluate dietary needs and discuss behavior or training concerns.

For our senior patients, regular physical exams and routine lab work will aid your veterinarian in detecting changes before they become a major threat to your pet’s health. This is also a great time to discuss issues related to aging pets such as how to keep them comfortable.

Vaccines are an important part of preventative medicine, but need to be customized for each patient. Our veterinarians will recommend an appropriate vaccination protocol for your pet, based on your pet’s lifestyle and health history.

Our veterinarians also recommend yearly stool sample checks to identify parasites that are common to Gig Harbor, such as Giardia and Roundworms.

Dentistry

Dental health for animals is just as important as it is for humans. Dental disease can contribute to bacteria being released into the bloodstream which can result in heart, liver and kidney disease. Our veterinarians can recommend dental care to help safeguard your pet’s overall health and comfort. Harbor Animal Hospital provides dental services that range from yearly prophylaxis (cleaning/polishing) to digital dental radiographs and dental extractions, as indicated. Comprehensive dental exams are an important component of your pet’s yearly wellness exam.

Surgery

Our veterinarians have had years of experience with a wide variety of surgeries. We perform surgeries every day – ranging from routine spays and neuters to growth removals and abdominal exploratories. You can be confident that your pet is in good hands – our veterinarians have over 75 years of combined surgical experience!

Laboratory

Diagnostic laboratory services at Harbor Animal Hospital include both in-house lab work when immediate results are needed, to those of local and national veterinary laboratories when more extensive or specialized testing is indicated. Laboratory services include, but are not limited to: blood chemistry, urinalysis, cytology, histopathology, parasitology and cultures.

Radiology/Ultrasound

Harbor Animal Hospital is able to provide both skeletal and soft tissue radiological services, as well as digital dental radiological services. We work closely with a board certified veterinary radiologist for diagnostic radiograph review. We also provide onsite ultrasounds in partnership with a mobile veterinary radiologist.

Specialists

We are blessed to have excellent veterinary specialists in the Puget Sound region. At Harbor Animal Hospital we work closely with local specialists to provide the highest quality care for our patients. In some cases these specialists are mobile and provide services to our patients at our location.

Specialists in our region include cardiologists, dentists, dermatologists, internists, neurologists, oncologists, ophthalmologists, orthopedic surgeons and radiologists.

Technician Services

At Harbor Animal Hospital, veterinary technician services are available to patients who have had an exam with one of our veterinarians within a calendar year. These routine services include nail trims, vaccine boosters, anal gland expressions, allergy injections and suture removals as well as minimal grooming procedures like demats and sani-clips. Technician appointment times are scheduled just like doctors visits but do not include an exam.

Microchipping

One of the best ways to locate lost pets is by microchipping them before they get lost. Harbor Animal Hospital is pleased to offer the Home Again microchip system. It just takes a few minutes for the procedure, and this simple step can help your pet find his or her way back to your family. We recommend microchipping for all of our patients.
